Hello and welcome to Missouri Sports Turf Consulting LLC.  Brian Winka is the owner and Lead Agronomist.  The goal is to provide high standard technical assistance and advice for our clients to help them succeed. 

 

Brian Winka, CSFM holds a B.S. in Agronomy from Missouri State University and became a Certified Sports Field Manager through STMA in 2008.  Brian’s background includes being in turf & grounds management for over 20 years.

 

Brian has developed comprehensive agronomic plans for the facilities that include IPM practices, a fertility program based upon soil/tissue test as well as other cultural and physical management practices.  These practices include aerification, selection of the proper landscape plants & turfgrass cultivars, over-seeding, topdressing, modifying irrigation as needed, and proper mowing heights. 

In 2009 Brian pioneered an athletic field growing concept of combining both warm and cool season grasses in the transition zone year round known as Bluemuda  .  This concept is a growing trend for many sports turf managers across the region and we are here to provide solutions and expertise.

Best Management Practices for Bluemuda

Bluemuda is the concept of growing warm and cool season grasses together long term and year-round in the transition zone.  Specifically, in this article I will be discussing mixtures of bermudagrass and Kentucky bluegrass. The concept has become possible and popular due to improved Kentucky bluegrasses like HGT from Barenbrug.

Benefits of Bluemuda

Bluemuda is a concept of growing warm and cool season grasses together, year-round in the transition zone. The concept became possible and popular due to some of the improved varieties of bluegrass, like the HGT from Barenbrug. The new varieties germinate and establish much faster than the varieties from even just ten years ago. These new bluegrasses also have more heat tolerance and disease resistance, which make them attractive for athletic fields.

For years, those of us who are fortunate or unfortunate to work in the transition zone, we have dealt with the issues that come with this transitional area.  We are fortunate because we can grow both warm and cool season turf grasses, but unfortunately neither one grows exceptionally well.  Sports turf managers in the transition zone deal with extreme weather conditions on both ends of the spectrum...
